Western vs. Chinese astrology
In short
Two astrological traditions with different foundations: the sky at birth versus cycles of time.
Basis
Western astrology uses the positions of Sun, Moon and planets in the twelve zodiac signs and houses at the moment of birth. Chinese astrology (BaZi, the Four Pillars) uses the cycle of ten Heavenly Stems and twelve Earthly Branches for year, month, day and hour.
The best-known part
In the West it is the Sun sign, which changes about monthly. In Chinese astrology it is the year animal, which changes once a year, and the year does not start on 1 January but around the beginning of February.
What each focuses on
Western astrology describes psychological themes and how planets interact. Chinese astrology focuses on the balance of the five elements, on your Day Master and on how energies change through Luck Pillars over decades.
Using both
They do not contradict each other because they answer different questions. One describes the inner landscape, the other the balance and timing of energies. Together they can give a fuller picture.
