In the Chinese zodiac, every animal comes in five elemental versions: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Your element follows the last digit of your birth year (from Lunar New Year): 4 or 5 Wood, 6 or 7 Fire, 8 or 9 Earth, 0 or 1 Metal, 2 or 3 Water. The element changes the tone of your animal, which is why your animal alone is only half the picture.
The five elements
- Wood: growth, vision, flexibility.
- Fire: passion, warmth, charisma.
- Earth: stability, care, practicality.
- Metal: clarity, discipline, strength.
- Water: wisdom, intuition, adaptability.
How elements change your animal
A Fire Horse and a Metal Horse share an animal but not an energy: the first may be bold and fast, the second determined and focused.
Balance
Each element also has a typical imbalance, for example Fire burning out from too much too fast, or Water retreating into overthinking.
An example
Born in 1993, you are a Water Rooster: the Rooster’s honesty and precision with Water’s intuition and adaptability.
One system is one lens
Elements add depth to Chinese astrology. Western astrology also uses elements (fire, earth, air, water), Human Design looks at energy, and numerology at recurring themes.
Different systems do not have to say the same thing to be useful. The interesting part is seeing where patterns repeat, and where they don’t.
